Making the Most of Drive Time
We listen to many audio books when we are driving for a long time. Instead of giving Jack a movie to watch and not engage with me,we listen to a book together. Sometimes it is a children’s novel,but we also listen to audio books from motivational speakers. We have listened to the The Aladdin Factor by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, and a number of other Canfield books. When Jack hears someone else tell him about the power of positive thinking,it is different when I tell him. It is not his mom nagging him;it is an authority figure. You do not have to break the bank either because the library is a great source for audio books. Give it a try! You will fill dead travel time with great learning,and have something in common to discuss with your kids afterward. My guess is you will be hooked like Jack and me! We laugh,have fun,enjoy each other’s company and learn all at the same time!
It is one thing to help you kid with goal setting and being positive,but let’s face it,we are not with them all day long. There are going to be times when they need a boost or a reminder of that they are going after or how unbelievably special they are. I came up with this idea by accident.
Jack and I were listening to Jack Canfield one morning in thecar on the way to school. He was teaching his listeners to write down their affirmations on a card or piece of paper and take it out and read it a couple of times during the day. I really wanted Jack to be able to think good thoughts during school but I didn’t have any paper.
I looked down and saw a bunch of those big tongue depressors. I had recently taught a class of scout leaders how to safely teach kids to use pocket knives and I used those big tongue depressors in my class. I had a bunch still in the car.
I grabbed a stick and a sharpie and wrote down our affirmations;one popsicle stick for Jack and one popsicle stick for me. We put them in our pockets and were on our way!They worked like a charm. I now keep a supply of them in my car and we use them often! They are a great way to start the day off in a positive light.
The Parking Lot
The “Parking Lot” tech- nique, used in corpo- rate meetings, keeps conversations on track but does not stop the creative flow of ideas. Here how it works : Keep a piece of paper handy. If your kid brings up a subject that is off the course of the current conv- ersation, write it on the Parking Lot and go back to the convers- ation at hand.
Once you finish dis- cussing the current subject, go back to the Parking Lot and devote your full attention to the subject your kid wanted to explore. If it works into what you are doing, great; if it is just something that came into your kid’s mind and they wanted to talk about it, that is fine, too.
The most important lesson the Parking Lot teaches is that kid’s thoughts are valid. It shows your child that you think they have something important to tell you. It also teaches them that any thought—at any given moment—might not be the right conversation for that moment. They learn to “hold the thought” until it is the right time.
The Parking Lot gives them a way to remember what they were going to say but still keep the conv- ersation on track. This is a great tool to use during homework when distractions mean extra time.
